Nigel Adkins hopes Sheffield United’s free week on the training ground will have helped “clear their heads” ahead of today’s League One clash at Oldham Athletic.

United enjoyed a rare week without a midweek fixture after Saturday’s victory over Rochdale, which sent them back in to the top six.

And Adkins, who also welcomed the rest for some of his players who are carrying knocks and niggles, said: “It’s a good thing to have an occasional rest. We all know about the relentless nature of Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday Tuesday in League One; we’re still in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and the FA Cup isn’t far away, either.

“So there’s a lot of games to fit in a short space of time. It’s not always just physical, either; from a mental point of view, it’s sometimes good to have a free week; it enables us to clear our heads and get on the training ground, to prepare for another tough run of games.

“Although we’re looking to win them, we know they’ll be difficult and we’ll never lose sight of that.”

Following their trip to Oldham, United face Fleetwood at Bramall Lane on Tuesday before hosting Milwall next Saturday.

“It’s relentless,” Adkins added, “but we knew that when we came here, because we’ve worked in this division before.”
