Birmingham City vs Sheffield United injury news: six miss out and three doubtful

The latest injury news as Sheffield United travel to the West Midlands to face play-off chasing rivals Birmingham City

Jairo Riedewald scored his third goal of the season to put Chris Wilder’s side in a great position to return to winning ways, but from there on United sunk further and further back into their box, with goals from Jack Stacey and Amankwah Forson completely changing the pattern of the game despite a bright start.

“We’ve gone from that feeling against QPR coming off the pitch to obviously a feeling now, where the narrative will be our season's over and whatever. And even if it is, or it becomes that way, it isn't ever over. We go right to the end and go right to the end against Derby [on the final day of the campaign],” explained Chris Wilder, who insists his side are still firmly in the fight for a play-off spot.

The focus now turns towards a trip to the Second City as the Blades prepare to go head-to-head with a Birmingham City side that have only lost twice at St Andrew’s in the league since the start of last season when Chris Davies became manager.

Both sides are in desperate need of three points to keep their top six hopes alive. Here’s the latest team news and injury updates regarding both teams.

Birmingham City injury news

Birmingham are light on options at left-back, Alex Cochrane hasn’t featured since New Years Day due to an ankle issue while Lee Buchanan has been out all season with a knee injury.

Fellow left-back Kai Wagner, who was signed in January, also picked up a knock to the shoulder which is expected to keep him out for a few weeks.

Tommy Doyle was missing for the second game running in midweek and at this point is a doubt to face his former club.

August Priske, who is still waiting for his first goal since arriving in January, was also absent from the matchday squad against QPR, making him a potential doubt for the weekend.

“We hope those two turn a corner but Kai will be a few weeks,” explained Chris Davies via Birmingham Live.

Sheffield United injury news

Gustavo Hamer’s absence due to suspension was felt in midweek as United slipped to a disappointing defeat at Norwich. He’ll miss one more match this weekend but is likely to be reintroduced against Wrexham at Bramall Lane.

Patrick Bamford’s fitness is currently being assessed after he missed the match in midweek. He’s been a stellar signing so far having scored eight in 19 appearances.

Kalvin Phillips hasn’t featured since his red card against Sheffield Wednesday. The Manchester City loanee is suffering from a knee issue and also missed the trip to Norwich City entirely.

Goalkeeper Michael Cooper has a knee injury which rules him out until the end of the season, while Jamie Shackleton, Sam McCallum and Tom Davies are also long-term absentees.

Sheffield United came out on top against Birmingham in a comfortable 3-0 win when the two teams met in the reverse fixture back in December. However, it’s worth noting that the Blues have been a completely different animal when playing on home soil this season.
