Sharp was the hero from the penalty spot as United secured their long-awaited first league win of the season on Tuesday evening, bringing up his 100th league goal for his boyhood club in the process.

United are now three points adrift of second-bottom West Brom in the table, ahead of their next game against Tottenham Hotspur at Bramall Lane on Sunday.

And Sharp insists: "The pressure is off us. Everyone wrote us off, we just have to dig deep for each other and stick together.

"The gaffer has said: 'Go out and play, everyone has written you off now so just go out and pick up a win quickly'.

"We did that last season and we beat teams who we are coming up against next."

As well as Spurs, United face both Manchester clubs away from home before the end of the month and also have the likes of Chelsea and West Ham coming up - as well as relegation rivals West Brom and Fulham.

"To get the first win in the league is a huge relief and hopefully the boys can take a lot from that," Sharp added.

"I am delighted for them because they have worked so hard this season and it's not quite gone for us."
