Chris Wilder’s side secured all three points after Palace ‘keeper Vicente Guaita dropped Ollie Norwood’s corner over the line in the 58th minute at Selhurst Park.

But once again VAR played a key role after it intervened when the home side’s Joel Ward was shown a red card for a foul on Enda Stevens, only for referee Andy Madley to downgrade it to a yellow after reviewing the incident on a pitchside monitor.

Speaking after the game, Wilder was full of praise for debutant Sander Berge – who signed for a club record £22m on Thursday.

“He looks like a Sheffield United player, he’s big, he’s strong and he’s athletic. He’s a good footballer,” said Wilder.

And on Twitter, United fans were equally impressed with Berge and their team’s showing.

@JeniParker4 Overlapping centre halves with nine clean sheets and fifth in the Premier League who would have thought it?

@keithwall1955 #twitterblades I have been supporting the Blades for over 50 years and I have to say this is the best it has ever been and I believe it will get better. Wilder is by far the best manager that either club in Sheffield as ever had.

@daveag I mean, seriously. What player wouldn’t just love to play for @SheffieldUnited. Kid’s first game and they sing to him as if he’s already a legend.

@DuncanPayne1 I keep expecting to wake up from a long and happy dream. Then I realise this is real. Sheffield United are fifth in the PL with two thirds of the season gone. And then I really start to dream.

@RobPNicholson Ugly win that. But good teams win ugly. Twelve points clear of relegation zone!

@ThomasCarter83 Berge looked tidy enough today. It won’t take him long to fully bed in in that midfield, a very intelligent footballer with real quality on the ball. #twitterblades

@jarnij10 Chris Wilder brought everybody together at every level in the club, love the man #GOAT #sufc #twitterblades
