The 6ft 4in defender arrived at Bramall Lane in the summer of 2017, signing a three-year deal. But he has spent the last 18 months on loan at Blackpool, and is now scheduled to spend the remainder of the 2019/20 season with Simon Grayson’s side.

Heneghan is out of contract in the summer at United, meaning his Bramall Lane career is all-but over. He played just once for the Blades, in an FA Cup tie, and was taken off just before the hour mark.

“I’m happy to get it over the line and help the club with its ambitions for the rest of the season," Heneghan said.

“The club and the supporters have been really good to me in the 18 months that I’ve been here, and I want to continue to repay the faith the manager and the Club have shown in me since I joined.

“We’ve made good additions in the transfer window and hopefully we can continue to grow as a team and have a good second half of the season.”
