"Baby" Aaron Ramsdale backed as Sheffield United's No.1 goalkeeper - by one of his predecessors at Bramall Lane

Paddy Kenny, the former Sheffield United stopper, has backed his predecessor Aaron Ramsdale to come good for the Blades - reminding fans that the England U21 international is still "a baby" in goalkeeping terms.

Ramsdale has endured a difficult start to his second spell at Bramall Lane following a summer return from AFC Bournemouth, with the Blades bottom of the Premier League table without a win so far this campaign.

In the week, he was backed by his England U21 manager Aidy Boothroyd, who reassured Ramsdale that he remains his No.1 goalkeeper and added: “He has had a bit of a tough time at the minute but I’m sure him and his club will turn the corner.

“He has got exactly the right character, he is going to be a top goalkeeper and we are really lucky to have him.”

Ramsdale has also made a number of good saves to keep United in games so far, and has not been helped by a leaky defence playing in front of him.

And Kenny believes that the youngster needs a bit of patience, while comparisions with Dean Henderson don't particularly help either.

"He's an absolute baby still at 22," Kenny said. "I didn't feel like I was in my prime for many years later than that, and you see that with a lot of goalkeepers.

"He's going to make mistakes, which United will have known when they signed him, but he's also made good saves at key times as well.

"But it was always going to be difficult following Dean Henderson, who was a goalkeeper I enjoyed watching. People are comparing them, which doesn't help and is always going to be hard.

"He [Ramsdale] is still a young lad who's learning the game and these moments are going to happen."

Kenny, who released his autobiography The Gloves Are Off last month, still keeps a close eye on events at Bramall Lane and hopes that they can get their season underway soon - ideally starting Sunday, against old foes West Ham.

"These games coming up now are big ones," he added. "You look at the next two, against West Ham and West Brom, and they have to get two wins really to get their season kickstarted."
