Have your say

Has anyone viewed highlights of a Sheffield game the right side of midnight?

Unless you’ve seen those early evening goal flashes on Sky, the chances are the eyelids will have dropped by the time

Wednesday and United appear on the screen.

But Channel 5’s entrance from left field in a three-year deal just being finalised means your late night football next season will actually be Match of the Day.

A 90 minute Football League highlights show is scheduled to start at 9pm every Saturday evening.

Channel 5’s takeover from the BBC has yet to be announced but a football source tells me: “The League felt they needed to do something different. There were three offers on the table and there wasn’t much between them financially. But one of the League’s main objectives was to have a show going out before MOTD.”

Mind you, the League show can still be viewed later if, by strange habit, you prefer.

It will be on Channel 5+1 – and also Demand 5 (an equivalent to iPlayer).
