The 21-year-old, who has made 20 appearances for Norway, has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract at Bramall Lane and becomes United’s third signing of the January transfer window, following in the footsteps of Jack Rodwell and Jack Robinson.

United fought off interest from a host of other clubs to secure Berge’s signature and boss Chris Wilder said he was delighted to finally land his man.

“The board have really backed us in this window to bring in players of the quality of Sander,” he said.

“He fits the bill in so many ways. He's a Norwegian international who has played 20 times for his country, he's also played Champions League football and we're delighted he has decided to come to Bramall Lane.”

And Wilder's delight has been echoed by United fans, who have taken Twitter to welcome Berge.

@daviesblades83 Well done to the owners and the board, the gaffer for getting this signing over the line. Fantastic news.
