But Blades fans have been quick to show their appreciation for a campaign to remember, after Chris Wilder's newly-promoted Blades finished ninth in their first season back in the Premier League. Here's how a selection of supporters reacted on Twitter today...

@The_Bladesman: To Leon and Kieron Freeman, two players instrumental in our rise to the Prem. An incredible season from Leon in our 1st season in the C'ship and a major part of Bouncing Day. Kez with one of the best seasons from a fullback L1 has ever seen. Thank you.

@adzblade8: Ninth best team in England..... 9th! You’ll do for me Blades, absolute heroes

@HillBlade1992: What a season! Tipped to finished 20th by every “pundit” (use that term loosely) and we’ve showed them all and finished 9th, ending last game of season with Zivkovic & Leon up front. What a football club! What a season! Bring on 12th September

@PaulBramall1: 9th best side in the country. £120m turnover for the season. Staying up means 3 seasons worth of parachute money now instead of 2 (worth about 80m). Ground back in the clubs hands. Manager on a 4 year deal. Numerous brilliant games and victories Thank you

@SUFC_SC: Sad way to end what has been a phenomenal season, been above and beyond expectations, can’t wait to see how this gets built on next season and where this ship ends up, going to renew the passport just in case....

@LysSulk: I’m pleased we’ve had a rocky spell - it’s sent a clear message out that the team needs help. Not many but a mobile RCB, a energetic RCM, some solid competition at RWB / LWB, 2 strikers, a 9 and a 10. Two that would be first choice not squad!

@jakesufc15: What a season, with Chris Wilder in charge who knows what we’ll achieve

@BHallam147: Fantastic season finishing 9th to dem Premier League Blades. Like all of us Blades’ fans I’m extremely proud of everything we’ve achieved this season. Thank you Chris, Alan and all the boys!

@ArtyBianco: On a positive note. As good as he is I can’t see Man U going into a Champions League campaign with an untested keeper? And if he’s not wanting to be a number 2???
