The visitors were 4-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from John McGinn, Ollie Watkins, Leon Bailey and Youri Tielemens, with Alex Mereno adding a fifth shortly after the break. United looked to have grabbed a consolation goal in added time when Vini Souza tapped home but after a lengthy VAR check, the strike was ruled out for offside.
Here's how we rated United's players as their faint survival hopes took another severe battering at Bramall Lane ...
9. James McAtee 3
Summed up United's early efforts when he pinged out a lovely pass to where Bogle should have been on the right wing - only Bogle was not there and possession was surrendered cheaply once more. Barely got into the game as Villa dominated and made way for Tom Davies with 20 minutes or so to go
10. Ben Brereton Diaz 3.5
Operated off the left wing as usual and with the form he's in, with two goals in his first two games in the Premier League, you'd have backed him to do better with an early chance after a ball over the top sent him clear. But his sidefooted shot was tame and straight at Martinez, even if the World Cup winner did almost make a hash of it before gathering at the second attempt. Lost his composure at the vital time in front of the Kop before making way not long after, for Archer, as United look to manage his minutes carefully
11. Will Osula 3
Hooked at the break after another tough time up front on his own. Gave Konsa something to think about on one occasion early on, when he held it up well to bring Brereton Diaz into the game, but for the rest of the half he was left chasing shadows as Villa took control Photo: Getty Images
12. Subs: Gus Hamer 4
Came on for Osula and was unlucky not to pick up an assist with a lovely couple of crosses, first for Robinson's header which was scrambled clear and then to cause havoc in the build-up to Martinez's excellent double save
