Two goals apiece from Jade Pennock and Katie Wilkinson and a first for Mollie Green saw the Blades blitz their opponents at the end of the first half and start of the second.

It took Carla Ward’s side almost 40 minutes to make the breakthrough but bar the odd Coventry United counter, the Blades were in control and came close on several occasions to breaking the deadlock.

Wilkinson in particular saw several chances go amiss before she got on the end of Sophie Barker’s cross to put the Blades in the lead before half-time.

That was followed by another three minutes later which put the game beyond Coventry. Pennock saw an effort saved but Green was on hand to fire home her first goal.

The Blades then added three more to their tally in 10 minutes after the break. First, Pennock was played in by Wilkinson and slotted home into the corner, before five minutes later she chested down Veatriki Sarri’s cross and fired a half volley into the corner. Wilkinson then came up with the moment of the match to seal it when her effort from 25 yards flew in off the crossbar to put the gloss on a comfortable performance.

Wilkinson said: “Coming into this game, everyone put in a good performance, everybody followed the game plan and that’s why we’ve not just won the game but scored five goals.”
