One of Sheffield United’s brightest stars has been named in a Premier League 'team of the season so far'.

The international break offers the time to reflect on a hectic start to the season, in which Sheffield United have defied pundit expectations to sit in 5th place after roughly a third of the season.

The Guardian have used the international break to compile their ‘team of the season so far’, and they have featured Sheffield United star John Lundstram in their star-studded team.

Lundstram has featured much more prominently this season after a relatively quiet role in the Blades’ promotion-winning campaign, and has scored three goals as a stand-out performer in the top-tier.

The Blade is in good company on the Guardian list, with Virgil van Dijk and Raheem Sterling among other stars to feature.

Explaining his decision to include Lundstram, Guardian writer Gregg Bakowski said: “He’s in everyone’s fantasy football teams, so why can’t he be in this one? It is no fluke that a player who struggled to get into the Blades team last season is now the beating heart of Chris Wilder’s side.

“A formation tweak has given John Lundstram license to get forwards from midfield and the 25-year-old has grabbed the opportunity with both hands. He’s scored three goals this season, timing his runs to perfection and showing lovely composure in front of goal.

“He has a phenomenal engine and is as happy creating chances as finishing them off. He may not be Kevin De Bruyne, Fabinho or N’Golo Kanté, but he’s been every bit as effective for the upwardly mobile Blades as any of those illustrious midfielders have been for their teams so far.”
