Sheffield United: Chris Wilder reveals tactical approach for next season and outlines campaign ambitions

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has claimed he won’t be lured into radically changing his tactical approach next season, as the Blades prepare to make the step up to Premier League level.

In an interview with the Mirror, Wilder discussed his plans to deal with the intense challenge of competing in England’s top tier.

He said: “The expectation level will be a little bit lower now, (but) nothing will really change in terms of the way we prepare the players. Philosophy, method and ­structure won’t change.”

It will be fascinating to see whether Wilder’s bold approach will pay dividends next season, as they look to test their brand of attractive football against England’s strongest sides.

Certainly, it’s an approach which has worked for Premier League side Bournemouth, and the clear parallels between the two clubs – in terms of player calibre and managers – could be a positive omen for the Blades.

Wilder went on to discuss his priorities for the 2019/20 campaign, and suggested that success in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup will be of little importance compared to the league.

He claimed: “Naturally, Premier League games will take more importance than cup games; staying in the Premier League will be a big achievement.”

While United haven’t won a major trophy since 1925, Wilder’s plans are clearly prudent, with the financial benefits of sustaining Premier League football far exceeding those of a one-off cup win.

Next seasons fixtures will be announced at 09:00 on Thursday 13th June, and the first matches of the 2019/20 campaign will take place on Saturday 10th August.
