Yesterday’s sacking of Sheffield Steelers coach Gerard Adams will go down as one of the most shocking departures in South Yorkshire sport in recent times, but he’s not alone.
Here we have a look through other notable, surprising exits...
Derek Dooley - Sheffield Wednesday 1973
A legend as a player for Wednesday, Dooley took over as boss in January 1971 and while his record was above average, almost three years later he would be on his way out. Despite a resurgence of form in the 1972/73 season a recently appointed new board decided it was time to move on and Dooley was sacked on Christmas Eve 1973, causing much resentment.
Ron Atkinson - Sheffield Wednesday June 1991 and May 1998
‘Big Ron’ has the unwanted distinction of leaving Hillsborough twice in surprising circumstances. First of all having won promotion and led the Owls to the League Cup, beating Manchester United at Wembley, Atkinson became a wanted man and after telling fans he wasn’t leaving, he did just that - jumping ship for Aston Villa. Then, after coming back seven years later to take over from David Pleat, initially on a short-term contract Atkinson staved off promotion and was expected to be given the job permanently. He wasn’t...to the bemusement of many, not least Atkinson himself.
Danny Wilson - Sheffield United April 2013
The man who replaced Atkinson, Danny Wilson didn’t last too long and after milling around Bristol City, MK Dons, Swindon Town and Hartlepool he hitched up, controversially in itself, at Sheffield United - charged with getting them back into the Championship. In his first season the Blades lost out in the play off finals to Huddersfield and then the following year were in a position to go into the play offs again. That wasn’t enough for United though and they got rid with a handful of games remaining in a bid to grab automatic promotion. They didn’t.
Trevor Francis - Sheffield Wednesday May 1995
A third place finish, two cup finals, two steady seventh places and one bad year where they ended up 13th saw Wednesday’s board get a bit too big for their boots and Francis’ record wasn’t deemed good enough with the world’s first million pound player sacked at the end of the 1994/95 season.
Gary Megson - Sheffield Wednesday February 2012
Winning a Steel City derby is usually a cause for celebration - not so for Gary Megson, who led the side to a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United and was then promptly given the boot with the Owls third in League One.
