Setback for Reds' Bobby

BARNSLEY defender Bobby Hassell faces the minimum of another month out injured.

The 27-year-old underwent minor surgery last week on the knee complaint which has sidelined him all season so far.

According to Barnsley, physio Richard Kay scans on the joint have been inconclusive but it is hoped Hassell will step up his training this week.

He has not played this season and missed all pre-season training.

Barnsley 17-year-old Jacob Butterfield has agreed a three-year professional contract at Oakwell.

He has been at the club a year and featured regularly for the Academy and reserve teams.

Called into the first team squad last summer, he went on pre-season tour of Portugal. He made his Barnsley debut as a second half substitute at Newcastle United last month, replacing winger Martin Devaney.

Said manager Simon Davey: "It was great for Jacob to get onto the pitch. He is only 17 and it was a fantastic night for him. He has a big future in the game".

Barnsley Academy manager Ronnie Branson added: "All our youngsters have been given a boost simply by seeing Jacob make that step up.

"He is one of them and he has proved that there is a path to first team football through the Academy. It has given everybody a lift". Leeds have signed goalkeeper David Lucas on a short-term contract.

He was on the books at Oakwell last season.

Lucas made over 100 appearances for hometown club Preston before joining Sheffield Wednesday.

The ex-England Under-21 international was signed by Barnsley but only played three times.

Barnsley Reserves were playing at Hartlepool this afternoon.
