Paul Cook gave four players their first ever senior starts tonight against Scunthorpe - but the going was tough almost straight from the start of this Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie.

Jack Broadhead and Charlie Raglan were at the heart of the back-line whilst ex-Owl Charlie Dawes and Gboly Ariyibi were on the wings.

Broadhead was re-carded with six minutes left.

Ollie Banks started for the first time this season just behind Armand Gnanduillet.

Scunthorpe put out a strong side including ex Spireite Gary McSheffrey and former Wednesday man Miguel Llera.

Spireites won the JPT in 2012 and reached the Final earlier this year. But another ex Owl Sean McAllister was the first on the score sheet, the 27-year-old scoring on 15 minutes, placing his shot wide of former Belper goalie Aaron Chapman.

McSheffrey added another ten minutes later - seizing the opportunity after the 6ft 8ins goalie had slipped after a pass back. Chapman recovered his composure and saved an audacious effort from Madden.

Chesterfield’s newly-signed winger Gboly Ariyibi was a livewire on the left, who threatened towards the end of the first half.

Both sides had half chances after the re-start.

Gboly’s clever back-heel gifted an opportunity to the busy Daniel Johnson, but he fired wide.

And Banks forced Olejnik into a save with a shot from distance.

Banks, who had to shake off an injury after a hard challenge, fashioned another couple of half chances soon after.

Sadly, Spireites’ effort was de-railed when 19-year-old Mansfield-born defender Broadhead was sent off for a second bookable offence (first a late tackle, then a shirt tug.)

That effectively signalled the end of the evening.
