Gerhard Struber’s men, who started the game bottom of the table, looked to be heading for relegation when their clash at Oakwell moved into injury time with the sides locked at 0-0.

But with only three minutes of added time remaining, a deep cross was headed back across goal by Jacob Brown and Schmidt fired the ball home to seal a crucial three points.

It was a spirited performance against a Forest side whose play-off place is all but secured.

Barnsley midfielder Alex Mowatt saw a curling effort palmed away by Jordan Smith early on while Luke Thomas clipped the crossbar and Marcel Ritzmaier’s long-range effort struck the post before Schmidt grabbed the winner.

The victory lifts Barnsley off the foot of the table but they remain two points adrift of safety with one game remaining.

Struber’s men travel to promotion hopefuls Brentford on Wednesday night knowing that even victory would not be enough, should results at Charlton or Luton go against them.
