Sam Hird: '˜Don't write off Chesterfield yet'

The Spireites suffered a big blow to confidence after they were beaten 1-0 in injury-time by relegation rivals Oldham Athletic last time out.

It leaves Caldwell’s men three points from safety after just one win in seven.

But Hird, who is available for selection after recovering from the calf injury that kept him out of the Oldham game, says Chesterfield can catch a number of teams if they can start banging in the goals.

“There’s probably nine teams all within touching distance,” he said. “It’s too early to write us off yet.

“The new gaffer has come in and has implemented his style. It’s now our job to do it on the pitch.”

“All the new players have settled in well, we have a good dressing room here.

“We do lack goals at the minute, but it’s a collective effort to put that right.

“We’re on 26 points at the moment, and I think 50 will be enough for us to survive.

“Northampton will be a tough game, we expect them to be direct. They have good physical threats up too.”

Dan Jones and Angel Martinez will be hoping to get more game time as they continue their recovery from injury.

Chesterfield ended Northampton’s 31-match unbeaten run with a 3-1 win back in September.

The Cobblers have lost six of their last seven matches.
