The drip-down effect of the African Cup of Nations could be starting to bite already as Rotherham United saw midfielder Tom Lawrence recalled to parent club Leicester City.

Clubs with players on temporary deals may struggle to have those extended as teams losing members of their squads to the international tournament aim to ensure they have as many bodies available as possible.

Leicester City will be without Algerian Riyad Mahrez and Ghanian winger Jeff Schlupp and so Lawrence, who made six appearances, scoring once for the Millers during his short spell, has been brought back to the King Power Stadium.

Rotherham United boss Steve Evans, said: “He may well be back again, we’ll have to wait and see. I had a long chat with Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson yesterday and he needs immediate cover as he is losing a couple of players due to the forthcoming African Nations Cup.

“We are grateful to Nigel and Leicester City for allowing us to have Tom here and I have no doubt we will look to do further player business in January.”
