Words of wisdom from Rotherham United legend Paul Warne helped turn striker Alex Revell into a Wembley hero.

Revell helped fire the Millers into the Championship with a two-goal salvo in the League One Play-off Final against Leyton Orient last month.

But earlier in the season the big targetman, despite being in fine form, was worried about not being prolific enough in front of goal.

Ex-player Warne, now a coach at the club, said: “I always tried hard and to this day the fans appreciate the effort I put in.

“Rotherham is a working-class area and the people there respond to a player who gives his all.

“I tell Alex that when he worries he’s not scoring enough.”

Like Warne was, Revell is a player who gives his all on the pitch and is a big favourite with fans, particularly after his second goal against Orient, a long-range effort which has gone down as one of the best ever seen at the national stadium.

Revell led the line superbly as the Millers closed in on promotion and finished the season with 13 goals - more than double the number he scored in the League Two promotion season 12 months earlier.

Warne, also a striker in his day, went on: “I gave everything I had as a player.

“I always said: ‘Don’t judge me on goals, judge me on how many throw-ins I win.’

“If you work hard, the fans will support you.

“I hate to see people with talent wasting it by not working on it.

“Give me a trier any day.”
