Combative midfielder Richard Smallwood has today joined Rotherham United on loan from Middlesbrough until the end of the season.
Several clubs were reportedly interested in bringing in the 23-year-old, including Yeovil Town and Bristol City, on a temporary basis.
But it is understood Smallwood, a graduate of Boro’s fabled youth system, spoke to his representatives this morning and said he wanted to move to Rotherham.
Smallwood, who has played 13 times for Middlesbrough this season, has made 60 league appearances since making his debut for the Championship club back in October 2010.
Smallwood becomes the Millers fifth signing of the January transfer window. He is expected to go straight into Rotherham’s squad for Saturday’s encounter with Crawley Town.
