Rotherham United head off on tour later this week, but that doesn’t mean their summer recruitment will grind to a halt.
The Millers will play three matches in Scotland, starting against Greenock Morton on Saturday, and manager Steve Evans is still working hard on new signings.
“I know the Gaffer has been busy on the phone,” said assistant boss Paul Raynor after last Saturday’s 3-0 win at Stocksbridge Park Steels. “He always is, but I know he’s been particularly busy.
“You never know, We keep everything under wraps and there’s not too much that gets out. but we’re optimistic that in the next week or so there’ll be at least one or two additions.”
The Millers made their eighth pre-season signing on Monday, landing Tottenham Hotspur central midfielder Grant Ward on a six-month loan.
They would like signing No 9 in place before they travel north of the border but are relaxed about the prospect of it happening later.
Ward had been training with the Millers and had scored twice in two friendlies before his loan deal was announced.
Rotherham approached Spurs at the start of pre-season and the 20-year-old was delighted to link up with the club after meeting up with Evans.
“It was a positive meeting,” he said. “I liked what he had to say about the club and his plans for me. What he said enticed me to sign really.”
Ward, who has trained with the Spurs first-team squad and had an impressive loan spell at League One Coventry City last season, immediately felt at home with the Millers.
“They’re a good bunch of lads and made me feel welcome as soon as I arrived,” he said. “Now I just want to play games and push on.
“I’m excited about the challenge of playing in the Championship.”
