Rotherham United look to have lost out to derby rivals Sheffield Wednesday in the battle to sign Scottish hot-shot Stevie May.

St Johnstone gave both Championship clubs permission to speak to the striker and the 21-year-old travelled south for negotiations with the Millers and Owls.

Rotherham had long coveted the frontman who hit 27 goals last season, with Wednesday entering the chase only in midweek.

Last night reports emerged that the player who scored in his final match for the Scottish side, a 1-1 draw at Spartak Trnava in the Europa League, had opted for Hillsborough.

Meanwhile, Millers No 2 Paul Raynor looked forward to this afternoon’s Championship opener at Derby County.

After making 12 summer signings, boss Steve Evans has to decide his best line-up, and Raynor said: “We know what we want to do. We know who’s looking sharp in training, who’s looked sharp in the games.

“People have different opinions but ultimately it will be down the manager. He’ll have an input from us all but ultimately he’ll know what he wants to do.”

One of the new boys, right-back Frazer Richardson, misses out through injury.

Raynor added: “We pride ourselves on picking the team on merit.

“It’s not about reputations. It’s not about who did well last season. It’s about a squad of players and picking the right team for Derby County.

“It will be done on fitness, who’s looking sharp, who will fit into the system we’re going to play.”

The match sees returns to their former club for Millers midfielders Paul Green and Ben Pringle.

The Rams could include in their squad holding midfielder Omar Mascarelli signed on a season-long from Spanish giants Real Madrid.
