Rotherham United boss Paul Warne is to hold talks with David Ball in the next 24 hours about a potential move to New York Stadium for the Fleetwood Town striker.

The Millers manager will speak with the in-demand 27-year-old old now that he is back from a 16-day UEFA coaching course in Belfast.

Ball, who hit 14 goals for last season for the League One Trawlermen, will be out of contract shortly and is poised to end his five-year spell at Highbury.

There has already been dialogue between Rotherham and the player, Millers No 2 Richie Barker revealed, although other sides are also keen on securing his services.

“There are conversations that we’ve had with him,” he told The Star. Paul Warne is due to speak to him again, I think, today or tomorrow to try to move things closer.

“We are one of the clubs he is having conversations with.”

Darren Potter

Rotherham will play in Leage One next season following their relegation from the Championsip. Ball, who has made more than 200 appearances for Fleetwood and is known for his number of assists as much as his goals, is an established performer in the third tier.

Meanwhile, the Millers could find out this weekend whether they have been successful in their pursuit of midfielder Darren Potter who is a free agent after leaving MK Dons.

Rotherham have made the 32-year-old an offer but, as with Ball, aren’t the only team chasing his signature.

“We’ll probably know more about that in the next 48 hours,” Barker said. “That’s when we could get an answer on that. We’ve certainly had a conversation with him.

“It’s promising in that there’s a lot of dialogue going on, but it’s not done and dusted yet. We’re one of the clubs interested in him.”

Barker knows Potter well, having been assistant boss at Stadium MK during the reign of Karl Robinson.

“Darren was vice-captain of MK Dons in the three years that I was there,” he said. “He was influential not just on the pitch but off the pitch as well. From what I know of him, I think he would benefit this club on and off the pitch.”

No announcements are expected on other targets over the next few days, Barker added.
