ROTHERHAM United manager Steve Evans stressed the need for a strong squad after pointing out the players not available to him ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup win over Stevenage - their first home win in the competition for ten years.

“We had five players out injured - no Scott Shearer, no Dale Tonge, no Lionel Ainsworth, no David Noble, no Daniel Nardiello,” said Evans.

“How many would have played? Who knows. But it emphasises that you need a good squad. The chairman has backed me on this and let me bring someone else in.”

That was winger Jamie Devitt who made his debut on loan from Hull as direct replacement for Ainsworth who won’t, after all, need surgery on his dislocated shoulder but is still expected to be out for the best part of three months. Groin strain victim Nardiello should be available for tomorrow’s trip to Fleetwood.
