Rotherham United could possibly make their first signing since becoming a Championship club within the next few days.

They have four offers in for potential targets and there have been talks over four or five players who are out of contract at their club.

St.Johnstone striker Steve May won’t be that early signing although he remains on the wish list of Millers manager Steve Evans.

May was watched by Millers assistant Paul Raynor and chief scout Gee Evans on Wednesday when he scored in Scotland U21s 6-1 defeat by Holland.

“I have spoken briefly with (St.Johnstone manager) Tommy Wright but I have yet to have a conversation with my chairman (Tony Stewart) over it,” said Evans who yesterday signed a new three year contract.

Evans said May was one of two players Rotherham watched in that game and he acknowledged that any club wanting to land the 21-year-old striker, for whom Wednesday’s goal was his 28th of the season, could expect to be looking at a fee pushing towards £1million.

First signing, Newcastle midfielder Conor Newton joined before Sunday’s final.
