Rotherham United: Darren Potter just can't get a Millers game

Midfielder Darren Potter has been thwarted again by the weather in his bid to make his long-awaited injury comeback for Rotherham United.

The 33-year-old, who hasn’t played since early December, was set to feature in today’s Central League reserves clash at home to Hartlepool United.

But the match was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch, leaving the summer signing frustrated for the second time in a week.

Potter, a key man for the Millers early in their League One campaign before sustaining an achilles problem at Bristol Rovers on December 2, had been pencilled in for the reserves’ encounter at Mansfield Town last Tuesday.

He was pulled out when wet conditions saw the fixture switched to an astroturf pitch.

“For medical reasons, with him making an achilles comeback, we didn’t want him to play on astro,” manager Paul Warne said. “He’s training with the squad all the time. He just needs a game.”

The former MK Dons man could finally get his chance on Thursday, when the reserves are due to play a rearranged match against Morecambe at Roundwood (kick-off 2pm).

In Potter’s absence, promotion-chasing Rotherham embarked on a 14-match unbeaten run and are fourth in the table, with five matches of the regular season left, as they head to second-placed Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

The Millers beat Fleetwood Town 3-2 last Saturday in a game which saw Will Vaulks play at right-back and centre-half.

Warne paid tribute to the versatility and attitude of a player who prefers to be in central midfield.

“He’s a good man to have around,” the boss said. “He said he was happy to play in any position if it got us in the play-offs, which is good.

“He moans all the time, but he can play in a lot of positions. He’s entitled to think he’s in the top two centre mids, but then he’s also probably in the top two centre-halves and top three right-backs/left-backs. He’s a good campaigner for the club.”
