CARETAKER-manager Andy Liddell says striker Tom Pope has been promised “a fair chance” on his return to Rotherham United.

Pope was recalled from his loan spell at Port Vale last week and found himself thrust back into first-team action at Cheltenham a few days later, a decision the player himself admits surprised him.

Commented Liddell: “All Tom wants is a fair chance and we’ll give him that.

“He justified the decision; he played well and was one of our best players. He worked hard and had everything but the finishing touch but was so close to scoring.

“Tom’s a good player - he cost £150,000, remember. He’s fit and ready to go and we need everybody because we have picked up a few injuries.”

Pope got the nod ahead of Adam Le Fondre which offers the prospect of him starting again for Saturday’s home game against Hereford who are five points above the drop zone but who have won eight away games.
