FORMER Rotherham United defender Gavin Gunning suffered Scottish Cup Final heartache on Saturday.

Gunning was in the Motherwell side - managed by former Sheffield United favourite Stuart McCall - which lost 3-0 to Celtic at Hampden Park.

Gunning made over 20 appearances at left back, including the 2010 League Two Play-off Final, after joining the Millers on loan from Blackburn Rovers during the January transfer window.

He was in centre defence on Saturday and hit the bar when Motherwell were only a goal down.

McCall left out former Wednesday striker Francis Jeffers when switching to a 4-5-1 formation although Jeffers went on in the last 20 minutes.

The Millers will face AFC Wimbledon in League Two next season after they beat Luton Town 4-3 on penalties in the Blue Square Bet Premier Play-off Final at Eastlands following a 0-0 draw.
