The Millers have been in negotiations with another Championship club over a striker for more than a week as they try to thrash out a loan deal.

The player, a mid-20s frontman with vast experience, wants to come and Warne thinks it could now happen before Saturday’s clash with Reading.

“I think we are virtually there, I can't see the player not joining,” Warne said after his side’s 2-1 win over Port Vale in the Carabao Cup.

“We look pretty close, I could turn my phone on and be disappointed, I would like to think I would get my dreamboy in by the weekend.”

His arrival would be timely as Conor Washington suffered a dead leg at Vale Park and could join Tom Eaves and Josh Kayode on the sidelines.

The boss declared it job done after his side advanced to the second round of the Carabao Cup.

A home tie with Morecambe is their reward for beating Vale on Wednesday.

Goals from Ollie Rathbone and Chiedozie Ogbene put the Millers in control before Mal Benning’s late goal set up an unnecessarily nervy finish.

They were hanging on in the end, but held out and advanced to the next round.

"It wasn't a classic,” Warne said. “I said to the lads after the game that it isn't something that we'll wake up tomorrow and remember forever.

"We got through and I said to the lads before the game that there were loads of Championship teams who had lost to lower league opposition and they're really tricky games.

"It is early in the season and there were parts of our game that I really liked and parts that I wasn't so keen on, but we won, we got through and as a cup game, that's what it's all about.

"We got some minutes into some people and the Cohens and the Jamies [McCart] haven't started a game together before, so there is loads that we can work on.

"We intended to turn up to win and we've done that. I think we can be pleased with that."
