Rotherham United show they're made of sterner stuff after dramatic win over PNE

When Ryan Ledson equalised for Preston in the 80th minute, Rotherham were probably fearing the worst.

After all, they have a significant track record of letting a lead slip late on in games this season.

Ledson fired in low from the edge of the box to cancel out Richard Wood's opener for the Millers and Preston, who arrived in South Yorkshire with an unbeaten away record, sniffed the three points.

It would have been perfectly normal had the doubts crept in to the Millers camp.

Yet, in a potential seismic change of tide, it was Paul Warne's men who climbed off the floor and scored four minutes from time through Matt Crooks.

After the disappointing loss to Luton in midweek, the Millers earned a vital 2-1 win, one they deserved for their hard work, endeavour and sheer guts and means they can go into the international break on a high.

Warne said: “I thought we played well, I was really pleased with the performance. I asked the lads to leave everything out there, they had two hours to set us up for a nicer international break.

“I thought we were the better team, I thought we created more chances.

“They were cranking the pressure up, but what pleases me the most is that we were winning, then drawing but the lads weren't clinging on to a point, they wanted all three and the fact they were courageous enough to go up the other end and try and create and on another day we might have got a few more.

“Overall, I am over the moon that the lads have shown the mental strength to concede late on but go back at them.”

After an even first half, Rotherham drew first blood when Wood, the evergreen Millers captain, scored from close range with a finish that any of the club's strikers would have been proud of.

They contained Preston, who had won 3-0 at Reading during the week, but when Ledson struck home from a cleared corner it was a familiar feeling for the Millers.

But this time things were different and Crooks won it as he finished off a fast break when he coolly struck home from Florian Jozefzoon's pass.

It could have been a totally different narrative had Jordan Stockley's header in the final few minutes gone in instead of hitting the post.

But it was a piece of luck Rotherham's performance deserved.
