Rotherham United: 'Relieved' Paul Warne hails character of players after incredible FA Cup comeback

Paul Warne put his side's miraculous FA Cup recovery at Solihull Moors down to the winning mentality in his squad.

The Millers were heading for humiliation as they found themselves 3-0 down with 75 minutes played.

It was an abject display by Warne's side and they seemed certain to lose to lower-league opposition for the 11th time in 17 seasons.

But Freddie Ladapo's strike turned the tide and started a run of four goals in 14 minutes, with Michael Ihiekwe and Michael Smith (2) completing the turnaround.

It gave the club their best FA Cup experience since beating Premier League Southampton way back in 2002.

“They’re good characters and we’ve recruited a bunch of winners,” he said.

“We said to them at half-time that we felt that they were letting themselves down a little bit.

“They do give everything but first half we over complicated it.

“We went backwards and sideways too much which isn’t really us.

“I think if we play with our DNA we’re a really good side and the last 25 minutes was more ‘us’.”

The fact that they needed such a miracle was down to a terrible performance, where they found themselves 2-0 down after only seven minutes.

Jamey Osborne and Alex Gudger gave the National League side a dream start, even though there were six players offside for the second goal.

Jimmy Ball looked to have completed the upset before the Millers came alive.

“I’m relieved is probably the best way to put it,” Warne added.

“We knew Solihull were going to be good and we prepared the team as well as we always do.”

“We did everything we possibly could to warn them of their threat and their physicality and in fairness I was always worried about conceding an early goal because it gives them a right boost.

“I thought they [Solihull] played really well, I’m not going to criticise my team.

“They stopped us getting the ball out wide and creating crosses and goalscoring opportunities and it wasn’t until we made the changes that we were able to create chances and take them.”

The Millers' reward is a third round clash at home to Championship Hull City.
