ROTHERHAM United midfielder Michael O’Connor was taken off after receiving a “final warning” from referee Trevor Kettle late in the first half of the home defeat to second-placed Port Vale.

Millers assistant boss Paul Raynor revealed that O’Connor, who had been booked in the 23rd minute for a foul, was given the warning in the presence of skipper Johnny Mullins and he was replaced two minutes before half-time on Boxing Day.

“It’s sad when, after two tackles, you get a final warning,” said Raynor.

The gate of 10,502 was New York Stadium’s third highest.
