Yates has spent the first half of the season on loan at Swindon and has impressed with 11 goals in 26 games.

His Millers career has never really taken off so Yates is likely to be keen to stay at the County Ground, with the Robins in the midst of a League Two promotion challenge.

But Warne says bringing him back to the AESSEAL New York Stadium could be an option if he needs to replace strikers in the January.

Warne himself has not spoken to the 23-year-old, but coach Matt Hamshaw has been in regular contact.

“I haven’t spoken to him personally. That is something I'm going to have to do,” Warne admitted to the Star.

“I know what he wants to do really. Hammy is in conversation with him all the time.

“We normally reach out to him every week. I have to manage his expectations as much as I do the club's.

“By this time next week I reckon I will be in a position to tell you more. I'm being sincere when I say this ... I don't want to kill the kid but I have to do what’s best for this club.

“If I was to lose strikers in the window and I wasn't able to get any in, bringing him back would be an option.

“If I was looking to recruit, say, two strikers ... if they hadn't scored and performed at the level Jerry has this season, I'd be stupid to sign them and not to bring Jerry back.

“I have to make the best decision for the football club and that might not necessarily be what Jerry wants.”

Meanwhile, Warne expects Jake Hastie to remain with the Millers until the end of the season even though he has been short of action.

The Rangers loanee has played 18 times, but has often featured off the bench.

“I expect him to be here, he hasn't probably as played as much as he would like, but then I could say that about a few players,” Warne said.

“I would still expect him to be here and I would expect him to play a part in the next few games.

“He is the same as everyone else, if he plays well and does everything we want and plays to his best then he will stay in the team.

“Whether Rangers will call him back because they won't be happy with his game time, that is something you will have to ask them, but I would like to keep him.”
