Rotherham United: Millers hope Matt Olosunde will be fit for cup derby against Sheffield Wednesday

The right-back, who has enjoyed an excellent start to his Millers career after arriving in the summer, was nursing an Achilles injury picked up at Burton last weekend.

Olosunde returned to training on Monday and should make the Owls clash on Wednesday.

Boss Paul Warne said: “At Burton, his Achilles was sore for the last 20 minutes.

“The physios said he wouldn’t do damage by staying on but would just be really sore the next day. “That’s why he played on. Hopefully, he’ll be able to join in training on Monday.

“The physios are reassuring me that Matt will be available.

“I hope they’re right because Billy’s absence has left us short in that area.”

Meanwhile, injury has ruined trialist Zak Dearnley's chances of earning a deal at the AESSEAL New York Stadium for the moment.

Dearnley is trying to find a new club after his release from Manchester United and was slated in to play a practise game last week with a view to persuading Warne to offer him a new deal.

However, he was struck down by injury the day before the game and was not able to take part.

Dearnely, who has been training with the Millers for three weeks, will get another chance.

"Unfortunately for him, he pulled his quad on Wednesday," Warne added. "Before I make a decision, I need to see him in a game.

"When he's fit again, if he hasn't got anything else fixed up, we'll have another look at him and let him play in a reserve game.

"We've left the door open to him and told him we want him to come back in again. He's a free agent. He was doing well.

"We had a game amongst ourselves with a few youth-team players. That would have been an ideal chance for him.

"We have to see something that suggests if I put him in the first team tomorrow he could potentially play the next five games.

"He'd been doing really well in training. But being involved in individual practice and position-specific practice and keep-balls isn't the same as playing in a game.

"Sometimes players can be amazing at things like that and are then non-existent in games. I'm not saying that would have happened to Zak. If he suddenly starts going past Joe Mattock or something, you take notice."
