Rotherham United: How Paul Warne reacted to Chiedozie Ogbene sending off

Rotherham manager Paul Warne refused to criticise referee Darren Handley for his performance in the 1-0 win over Accrington on Saturday.

Carlton Morris' first-half goal was enough for the Millers to earn their first victory at home in almost two months, but they had to play the final 10 minutes with 10 men.

Handley decided that Chiedozie Ogbene took a dive in his own half and showed the winger a second yellow card.

The crowd inside the AESSEAL New York Stadium were furious as their appeared to be a clear foul on Ogbene, but Warne, perhaps with his wallet in mind, opted to keep his counsel.

“In fairness to the ref he's there so I presume he's right,” a pragmatic Warne said. “I haven't seen it back.

“The rules are the rules. I've got no sympathy.

“If he's dived, which is what the referee said to me, he deserves his second yellow. I thought at the time he'd won it back and we had a free-kick so it was disappointing but the rules are there.”

Handley's overall performance left a lot to be desired, and while Warne did not criticise the official, the boss was confused by his lack of consistency.

“All you can ask of your players is to be the best they can be, and the same with the officials, so I'm not here to criticise that,” he added.

"Sometimes the opposition don't stay on their feet and they win free-kicks.

"If the ref is going to penalise Chieo for going to ground then he has to do it for every other instance where people have dived.

"The ref didn't always give free-kicks. There were loads of times where he played on and said, 'That's not a foul. Get up.' If you set that precedent you've got to follow it through.

"I thought there a lot of fouls in the game. In fairness, the referee in the first half tried to speed up the game for us.

"There were a few Accrington offsides not given that I thought should have been. But then I would think that because I'm right on edge, aren't I?"

The Millers moved into the top six after a seventh league win in 10 games.
