The winger, who has been one of the Millers' standout performers of 2020, suffered a knee injury in training at the back end of last week.

That ruled him out of Saturday's 1-1 draw with Huddersfield and he will go under the knife after meeting a surgeon on Monday.

Boss Paul Warne, who will consider his options in the remaining two weeks of the EFL transfer window, was crestfallen at losing one of his best players.

“It's bad news on Chieo. He damaged his knee in training on Friday,” Warne said.

“He's had a scan and he's seeing a surgeon on Monday. He'll be out for a minimum of six to eight weeks.

“Fortunately, it will coincide with two international breaks. He might miss five or six games.

“He's a big part of how we play. He's a big attacking threat for us. Against Huddersfield, we missed him. I think he would have got us up the pitch and caused no end of problems.”

Ogbene's pace and power has made the big outlet on the right for the Millers, but he is also able to help out in a defensive capacity.

Warne believes his side missed that, with his replacement Ben Wiles struggling to contain Terriers wing-back Harry Toffolo.

“It's not only when he has the ball,” Warne added. “His presence would have stopped Harry Toffolo, who was pretty instrumental in their second-half performance.

“He would have pushed Toffolo back. It's no disrespect to Wilesy - I thought Wilesy played really well - but Chieo on the wing is another level.”
