Rotherham United: Derbyshire set for Millers exit

The Star understands Derbyshire, who is out of contract this summer, has lined up a move to a club in Cyprus despite being offered a new deal by the Millers.

Stubbs says news on defenders Kirk Broadfoot and Stephen Kelly, who also have Rotherham offers on the table, is imminent.

“We could be in a position to make an announcement tomorrow or Monday that we’ve got two done,” he said. “That’s how close it is.

“It’s fair to stay I would like all three to remain at the club.”

The trio played key roles in keeping the Millers in the second tier before Stubbs took over from Neil Warnock a fortnight ago.

The new man is busy plotting for next season and says he is “making progress” as he looks to bring new players to AESSEAL New York Stadium but is prepared to be patient in his quest to sign the right men.

Three Premier League veterans unlikely to be coming to Rotherham are midfielders Steven Pienaar and Leon Osman and full-back Tony Hibbert, former Everton teammates of Stubbs who have been released by the Merseyside outbit,

“They’re quality players,” the boss said. “However, there’s not really an interest there from us.

“For a spell, Steven, with Leighton Baines, was part of the best left flank in the Premier League. ‘Oz’ isn’t the fastest, but he’s very intelligent and quick in his head. Tony has been unlucky with injuries in his career.

Age is against them, with all three 34 or over, and Stubbs, who has spoken of his love of developing young talent, added: “I don’t think there’s anything in

it for us.”

One player who will be with Rotherham next season is centre-half Richard Wood - another star of the march to safety under Warnock - who earlier this week signed a new one-year contract.

“I’m delighted,” Stubbs said. “Woody had a great end to last season when he was consistently good. Now I’m looking for him to carry that into next season. Hopefully his signature is the first of many.”

The likely destination for Derbyshire, who has scored 18 goals in 74 appearances in his two years with Rotherham, is thought to be Cypriot Division One club Omonoia Nicosia.

He is no stranger to European football, having played for Greek club Olympiakos earlier in his career.
