Just weeks after Chiedozie Ogbene and Clark Robertson were ruled out to long-term injuries, MacDonald has joined them in the treatment room and will not play again this year.

The midfielder suffered the injury in an innocuous challenge at Stoke last week and he tried to play on before eventually succumbing to the problem.

A scan on Monday showed that there is a fracture, which will require him to be in a pot for four weeks.

.MacDonald does not need surgery, but still will not be seen until 2021.

“We had news that Shaun Mac has broken his leg so he is out for a period of time,” boss Paul Warne said.

“His tib and fib smashed into each other when he landed at Stoke, so we won't see him before January.

“He will be in a pot for four weeks, then once it has healed he starts his rehab. It is a big blow for us and Shaun because he was in really good form.

“It's disappointing, he thought he could play on on Saturday so that shows the player he is. “It's a big blow but it is next man up, someone else has to full his boots. He loves playing football, he does everything right and he has just been really unfortunate.”

MacDonald was missing for Wednesday night's concerning 1-0 loss to Luton, which saw age-old frailties in the Championship come to the fore.

After a promising start they have been sucked right into danger and their plight was made worse by Sheffield Wednesday getting six of their 12-point deduction back.

Warne admits that has changed the dynamic at the foot of the table.

He told the Star: “We have been obsessed that we are not going to look at the bottom, we are going to look up, but I would be lying if I said teams picking up points and us not is not a problem.

“It definitely changes the dynamic. I don't know whether there will be a counter appeal. I was really surprised, I didn't even know anything was happening with it.

“I got told about a press conference and now I know what that was about. It was a bit of a shock, it came through before the game. It is above my paygrade.”
