Robertson was one of the standout players for the Millers in the Championship last season, but was unable to help them beat the drop.

The centre-half turned down a move to Sunderland last summer in order to join the Millers from Blackpool owing to their second-tier status.

Part of the driving force for that decision was the 28-year-old's desire to win a full cap for Scotland, having represented his country at youth level.

He hopes playing League One will not count against him, but is keen to get back into the Championship as quickly as possible, eyeing a promotion push next season.

“I just hope that next season we can get ourselves back up the table in League One and hopefully back in the Championship,” he said.

”I came here wanting to get into the Scotland squad and I thought I'd have to play Championship football to do that and I've had that for the last 10 months.

“Hopefully people out there have recognised my performances and in the near future I get a chance to show what I can do.”

Life at Rotherham did not get off to the best start as he found himself behind Richard Wood in the pecking order and when he did get his chance he suffered an early-season injury.

Once he got into the side, forming a strong partnership with first Semi Ajayi and then Michael Ihiekwe, there was no looking back as the former Aberdeen man showed his quality.

“I think I've improved massively,” he added. “(Assistant manager) Richie Barker is always working on the defensive side of our game and I think I've definitely become more aggressive in my style.

“I think that's shown in my performances and hopefully I can take the things I've learned this season into the next one.

“At the start of the season it was difficult for me coming in behind Woody.

I think since I've had my chance, I've taken it well and I've shown that I can play at the level.

“I just hope that next season we can get ourselves back up the table in League One and hopefully back in the Championship.”

Will Vaulks will continue with his fledgling international career after being named in Wales' squad for Euro 2020 qualifiers against Croatia and Hungary.
