Rotherham United: Chiedozie Ogbene 'could be hard to keep hold of' - Paul Warne

Ogbene was a summer signing from Brentford and took time to settle in as injury and suspension curtailed the first half of his season.

But the winger is coming good and it has coincided with a run of form that has sent the Millers to the top of League One.

Ogbene is eye-catching at the best of times with his lightning quick speed, but he is beginning to provide an end product, such as three assists in 20 minutes against Solihull Moors in the FA Cup and one for Kyle Vassell in the 3-1 win over Oxford at the weekend.

Boss Warne says that he has been a work in progress, but the end product will be very attractive to other clubs.

“Well he is good if he listens to us,” Warne said. “He came in from a club who played a different style to us.

“In fairness to him that is what we have been trying to chisel out of him, we don't expect our wide men to come inside the pitch and play sideways and backwards and into a 10.

“Brentford's play is unbelievable, that is not a criticism of them, it's just not the way we play at this club at this time.

“What I do expect from my wide men is to run up and down a train line and cross it.

“The penny has been dropping with him recently, he has been excellent, I thought recently he has been unplayable.

“If Chieo continues in the form he is in, he will be a hard one to keep hold of I think.”

Warne has been impressed with the 22-year-old's work rate and desire to improve.

“He's got it on lockdown, he is the nicest kid in the world, he is trying to improve, he has worked really hard on his crossing, I didn't think that was the best when he came in, but I feel now that Hammy (coach Matt Hamshaw) has done a lot of work with him, telling him just to put it in an area and that has helped him significantly.”

The Millers have announced that 18-year-old attacker Jacob Gratton has penned his first professional contract.

The teenager, who was named on the bench against Fleetwood before Christmas, has impressed in the youth ranks and signs a contract until 2022.
