The Millers welcome the Owls to the AESSEAL New York Stadium for the first South Yorkshire derby of the season and given both side's respective positions it has taken on early significance.

Wednesday are trying to eat in to their 12-point deduction imposed by the EFL and will view the game with Rotherham as a good chance to close on their neighbours.

Similarly, for Warne's men, a win would extend that gap to 13 points after eight games, which would be a nice buffer for a side aiming to keep their heads above water.

Warne has admitted the importance of getting a win has entered his head.

“Anyone you play in and around you are bigger games anyway,” Warne told the Star.

“If we were playing Coventry or Bristol City, a Coventry win would mean more for obvious reasons.

“You always try and beat the teams in and around you and if we did win it would still keep the 12-point buffer.

“It is definitely in my head, it's not in my players' head, we need them to just concentrate on the opponent. I would be lying if I said it wasn't in my head.”

Despite the Owls' indifferent form, where they have lost their last two games, Warne thinks they still have enough to beat the drop this season.

He is impressed with Garry Monk's recruitment this season, which is why he cannot be too sympathetic to his colleague's situation.

“It is difficult, but every job in management is difficult, there is no easy job,” he said.

“There are some who have to guarantee survival, there are some who have to guarantee play-offs and some who have to get automatic.

“Would Sheffield Wednesday normally finish 12 points above the relegation zone? I have got a funny feeling they will.

“There are difficulties, he is changing the club, the players, he has got his own staff in and they are slowly and surely eating away at the points.

“He has got a good squad to pick from, that's for sure, my sympathy doesn't go 100 per cent, but I understand the difficulties he has got.

“Twelve points for Sheffield Wednesday, if we were betting men we would all bet that they would survive.”
