Retro: Steve Kendal and Bob Newton with first and last minute goals for the Spireites
Chesterfield's recent game against Gillingham saw a last-minute equaliser that rather took the gloss off the first-minute goal that gave the Spireites the lead.
That sent Spireites historian Stuart Basson trawling the archives for first and last minute goals.
The first of our photos from the club archive contains no Chesterfield players at all.
Club photographer Alan Roe illustrated the benefits of proper preparation by being on the spot to capture the balletic desperation of a Chester defender as Steve Kendal’s speculative first minute shot evaded him and looped into the net to open the scoring.
The game was the second in a run of three October draws that allowed early leaders Hereford United to regain top spot from us, briefly, at the head of Division Four.
A couple of weeks earlier the team won conclusively at Halifax Town to close the gap on The Bulls at the top of the table, before dislodging them a week later.
Our second image shows Bob Newton following up a last-minute penalty that Halifax keeper Paddy Roche had saved.
Newton crashed the ball home to secure a 3-1 win.
Two Ernie Moss goals had given Chesterfield a 2-1 lead prior to Newt’s last-minute heroics.
