Retro: Spireites shock Mohammed Al-Fayed and Kevin Keegan's Fulham at Saltergate

This week's Chesterfield FC retro photo shows an example of what happens when celebrations go wrong.

At the end of the 1998-9 season a Fulham side on its way back up the leagues, bankrolled by Mohammed Al-Fayed and managed by Kevin Keegan, came to Saltergate and were beaten 1-0 by a late Jamie Hewitt goal.

The victory was much to the delight of a home support that had had to suffer the arrogant taunts of the Cottagers on Cross Street.

In a photo captured in the wake of the goal, Fulham keeper Maik Taylor looks on in disbelief as Chesterfield’s goalscorer wheels away to celebrate.

David Reeves, on the other hand, was delighted, as is shown in the next photo taken, a second or two later.

Jamie attempted to leap into the forward’s arms but a duck and shuffle on Reeves’ part caused Hewitt to end up on Reeves’ shoulder, where he was carried for a few yards in some sort of a fireman’s lift.

If it was a choreographed celebration it wouldn’t have got very far on Strictly.

Certainly Keegan, in the background of the second photo with his arms folded, didn’t appear to love it.
