Reds signing gets serious

NEW Barnsley signing Jamal Campbell-Ryce is ready to scale down his international career.

The ex Millers' winger, landed by Oakwell chief Simon Davey on transfer deadline day, will tell Jamaica: 'Don't call me up unless it's a serious game.'

Said Campbell-Ryce: "If they're friendlies I'm not interested. I look upon playing in internationals as a privilege. Here at Barnsley, it is my job, it's my living, it's my priority."

He has won three international caps and was called up for the Reggae-Boyz team that lost 6-0 to England at Old Trafford in June 2006.

The 24-year-old signed from Southend for a fee reckoned to be 175,000, is expected to begin his Barnsley career this afternoon with a game for the reserves against Bradford's second string in a Pontin's League Cup tie.

His last competitive game was last month. He played for Southend at Leeds on August 18 in League One.

When Barnsley made their interest in the former Rotherham United and Chesterfield wide-man clear, he told Southend United manager Steve Tilson that he did not want to play until his future was settled. He could now be given his Barnsley debut against Scunthorpe on Saturday week at Oakwell.

"Either wing, I don't mind. I was in the Championship last season with Southend and from what I saw Barnsley gave a good account of themselves. I just want to show what I can do for this club now."

MANAGER

Mark Robins welcomed Rotherham United's Johnstone's Paint Trophy victory at Mansfield last night and said it was important because of the "winning culture" he is trying to recreate at the club.

"People talk about the early rounds of this competition being a bit of a bind and getting in the way of the league but we took the most important thing out of last night and that was a win," said Robins.

"We want to establish a winning culture here, we are trying to turn things round at this football club after some difficult times and there is nothing better than winning whatever the competition.
