Reds keeper's instant debut

GOALKEEPER Heinz Muller is set to make his Barnsley debut tomorrow against Coventry if the club can get international clearance in time.

The giant German joined manager Simon Davey's squad only yesterday. He is expected to take over from Nick Colgan, who was almost ever-present for the club last year.

Davey is continuing to have talks with an unnamed Danish striker. He will not be involved in tomorrow's game at Oakwell.

As many as six new players are set to make their first appearances for Barnsley tomorrow. Rob Kozluk, Dominik Werling, Andy Johnson, Rohan Ricketts and Miguel Mostto look set to play as Davey begins his first full season in charge.

Yesterday, Muller signed a three-year deal at Oakwell and became the 10th new face at Oakwell this summer.

The 29-year-old, who started his career with Hannover 96, had spells with Armenia Bielefeld, St Pauli and Jahn Regensburg in Germany, before moving to Norway in 2004 to join Odd Grenland.

Muller switched to top Norwegian side Lillestrom in 2005 and played against Newcastle in the Intertoto Cup last summer.

Tomorrow's opponents, Coventry, have name nine summer signings.

Said Davey: "They're a bit of a an unknown quantity. We had them watched against Udinese but sometimes in friendlies you're thrown a curve ball. We'll find out about them at 3pm.

"It's a tough game but we're at home and we're looking to win it.

Coventry manager Iain Dowie added: ""It is always better to start with a home game, but we have got Barnsley away.

"I have made the point to the boys that this is the hardest game of the season because it will be the first time the new signings play together with points at stake and it will be in unfamiliar surroundings.

"I have been to Oakwell many times and they get a great atmosphere there, and the first game of the season is always very special.

"We have had them watched three times and they will be treated with the utmost respect."

Reds midfielder Sam Togwell, aged 22, has signed a contract extension keeping him at Oakwell until June 2009.

, boxing personality and Wednesday fan Dennis Hobson has offered to help Brian Laws add three players to his squad for the new season.

Hobson claims that he could steer Manchester City defender Danny Mills, Derby winger Gary Teale and Sheffield United striker Geoff Horsfield the Owls' way and says that he would "subsidise" the deals in some way.

But Laws had to say no to the offer because it would still have meant Wednesday adding to their already-stretched wage budget.

Hobson said: "I'm a worldwide traveller with contacts not only in boxing but also in football.

"I rang Brian to tell him that I could get him these players. and told him it wouldn't break the club's wage structure; I would have subsided the necessary financial outlay in some capacity.

"Brian seemed a nice chap. He said 'unless I'm getting them for nothing, I can't (sign the players). I've got a budget and I've gone over it. But I do like Danny Mills'.

"He said he had to take off the pressure to get a striker in and hoped to get one for Saturday."

The Owls have since landed Francis Jeffers in a 700,000 deal with Blackburn and will have committed a substantial financial package to the player's three-year deal.

Hobson added: "I was just seeing if I could help in any way. I won't follow it up with anything else.

"But if they want to get in touch with me for help in brokering a deal, I'm still here.

"I think if I offered a player to Sheffield United who their manager fancied, they would welcome me with open arms. There might be some politics involved, with Wednesday."
