PREVIEW: Facts, stats and dangermen as the Spireites visit Charlton Athletic

Like the Spireites, Saturday’s hosts Charlton have won just three times in the league this season.

But the Addicks have also only lost three League One encounters, drawing the other eight.

Danny Wilson has said Chesterfield’s goalscoring woes – without a goal in four outings – is a major concern.

His opposite number is also out to increase the threat contained by his men.

South London Press sports editor Richard Cawley said: “Charlton are the division’s draw specialists - along with Bradford - and one of their biggest issues has been getting a cutting edge to their play.

“Ricky Holmes’ penalty miss was their third from the spot this season and getting more out of the attackers is a priority for boss Russell Slade.

“Defensively they are strong with Jason Pearce, Chris Solly, Morgan Fox and Declan Rudd all performing well.

“They’re maybe missing that extra midfield option after failing to land Norwich’s Louis Thompson in the last transfer window.”

Cawley says Charlton are a side who, in the main, like to get the ball down and play.

Boss Slade has mixed it up between a 4-4-2 and a 4-2-3-1 formation and after an impressive cameo from Nicky Ajose at the weekend, Cawley wouldn’t be surprised if he joins Josh Magennis in attack.

They also of course have last season’s Chesterfield top scorer Lee Novak on their ranks – a man who wanted to stay at the Proact before Town set their sights on another centre forward, Ched Evans.

Former Chesterfield loanee Ajose came on to score an injury time penalty, conceded by ex Spireite Chris Herd, to give Charlton a point at Gillingham.

Another two players who have impressed of late are Ricky Holmes and Jason Pearce.

Cawley said: “Holmes has been their star offensive performer.

“A great dribbler, an eye for goal and also gets stuck in.

“I’d also say that Jason Pearce has been another to have bedded in well since his move from Wigan - not showy at all but just gets on with defending competently.”

Charlton have the third best defensive record in the division, while Chesterfield have the worst attacking record away from home in League One.

The last time they two clubs met was February 2012, when Charlton were 4-0 winners at the Proact.

At the Valley that season, Town were beaten 3-1.

The Spireites have lost half of their meetings with the Addicks since 1931.

Charlton have picked up the least cards of any League One side this season with just 12 bookings and one red card.
