Preparation for Blades clash is blueprint for Spireites to move forward

Town were unlucky to lose 3-2 at champions Sheffield United, having missed some good chances even when down to 10 men after Dan Gardner’s dismissal.

The manager believed they deserved at least a point from the season finale.

“I thought we were magnificent,” he said.

“Aanother big away performance, we should have won the game – we definitely shouldn’t have lost the game.

“But ultimately the fine margins of football, winners get them right and losers don’t. We fell on the wrong side of a result.

“I see a lot in certain players and I see a lot in my staff that we can rebuild this club and come back much stronger.”

The way the Spireites approached the game is how Caldwell wants them to operate from now on.

“We had a game plan, we worked hard all week and I said to the players that’s the way we move forward.

“We have to work hard Monday to Saturday and Saturday is when we go out and show how good we are.

“We’ve done it on occasions but we haven’t done it enough and you pay the price for that.

“How they handled themselves, I can’t ask much more of them and I’m looking forward to next season already.”
