The Millers have only added left wing-back Ryan Giles to their squad so far this month, but Warne is making headway with another central player.

It would be a loan until the end of the season and the player would come into help a five-man midfield unit.

“We need to make a quality addition in the middle of the park to get us through,” Warne said.

“I am always hopeful that it is close. We play with four central midfielders at the moment, I like the system we are playing with, but we have got five central midfielders of which four are playing.

“It is inconceivable to think we can get through to the end of the season with them playing 90 minutes of 23 games.

“We are asking them to play on their limit every game. That is where I see we need strengthening.

“I have got a target in mind and there is more than one because you just don't know how well it is going to go.

“If I am honest, the stage I am with the player, I have spoken to the club, the club are insinuating he is available.

“There are other clubs interested, as there always are with the best players, the agent says he is available, but if it's financially we can do it.

“I feel like we are a long way there, it could be affordable, I think the lad would like to come out and play and I just have to get it past the manager and that can sometimes be the hardest or the easiest bit.”
