One more year for Weir

The Derbyshire Times understands that the Northern Irishman, who captained the Spireites for the second half of the season under Jack Lester, played enough games to trigger a second-year extension clause in his contract.

That clause was not made public when Weir was unveiled as a new signing late last summer, many believing the 29-year-old to have signed a 12-month deal only.

Weir made 44 appearances in midfield and at right-back for Town in his first season as a Spireite, one that ended in relegation from League Two.

It’s the second time in two seasons that Weir has captained the side who have finished bottom of the Football League.

Chesterfield must publish their retained list by the third Saturday in May, making it imperative that a new manager is appointed with enough time to take decisions on the futures of players whose contracts are up.

Players like Ian Evatt, Sam Hird and Giles Coke are coming to the end of their deals at the Proact.
